Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Satyam Computer Services Ltd. Chairman Ramalinga Raju resigned after saying he falsified accounts and assets, sending shares of the Indian software services provider to a record decline.
Raju, 53, unsuccessfully tried to sell two companies to Satyam last month in a final attempt to plug 50.4 billion rupees ($1.04 billion) of “fictitious assets” on the company’s balance sheet, Hyderabad-based Satyam said in a statement today. Profits from the main business have been inflated “over a period of last several years,” Raju said in a letter to the board.
The transactions started to unravel after shareholders vetoed the sale of two construction companies, four directors quit the company and the World Bank barred Satyam from bidding for contracts. India’s markets regulator C.B. Bhave said the event is of “horrifying magnitude” as Satyam dragged down the benchmark stock index already hit by a record slump last year.
“This is a black day for India, the software sector and corporate governance claims,” Arun Kejriwal, founder of Kejriwal Research & Investment Services, said in Mumbai. “If at all there’s an event that could be the biggest setback for corporate India, it is this.”
Shares of Satyam, which means “truth” in Sanskrit, plunged 69 percent to 55 rupees in Mumbai trading. The Sensitive Index tumbled 4.3 percent.
‘Non-Existent’
Of the reported cash and bank balances of 53.61 billion rupees on Sept. 30, 50.4 billion rupees was non-existent, Raju said in the letter sent to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Operating margin at Satyam, India’s fourth-largest software exporter, in the quarter ended Sept. 30 was 3 percent of revenue, instead of the reported 24 percent, Raju said in the letter. The company’s revenue was 21 billion rupees, 22 percent less than the inflated figure of 27 billion rupees that had been reported.
Raju arranged 12.3 billion rupees “to keep operations going” at Satyam over the last two years by pledging the founders’ shares and raising funds from other sources, he said.
“What started as a marginal gap between actual operating profit and the one reflected in the books of accounts continued to grow over the years,” Raju said. “It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten.”
‘Easy Target’
The founders’ concern was that a poor performance, combined with the fact they held a small stake in the company, would make Satyam an easy target for a takeover, exposing the inflated figures, he said.
Satyam yesterday denied a report that the company received a merger offer from Tech Mahindra Ltd., an Indian software-services provider controlled by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and partly owned by BT Group Plc.
Tech Mahindra termed the report of a proposed all-stock merger as “speculative.”
Earlier in the week, MindTree Ltd. denied a report it was one of two smaller rivals in talks for a merger with Satyam. The Hyderabad-based company is in talks to merge with smaller rivals including HCL Technologies and MindTree, the Business Standard reported on Jan. 5, citing unidentified people at investment banks.
Raju’s attempts to “keep the wheel moving” at Satyam was finally derailed as lenders sold most of the pledged shares because of margin calls, he said.
Reduced Holdings
SRSR Holdings Pvt., which holds the founding family’s stake, reduced their holding to 3.6 percent from 5.13 percent, Satyam told the Bombay Stock Exchange yesterday. Of the 3.6 percent, 1.7 percent is pledged with lenders, it said.
The stake sales by the families of Chairman Raju and his younger brother, manager director Rama Raju, reduced their holdings to below levels held by institutional investors including Aberdeen Asset Management Plc. Funds run by Aberdeen own 6.6 percent of Satyam, according to data compiled by Bloomberg until the end of October.
Raju scrapped the planned acquisition of Maytas Properties Ltd. and Maytas Infra Ltd. last month, less than 12 hours after announcing it, after the company’s ADRs plunged.
Separately, the World Bank Dec. 23 declared India’s fourth- biggest software-services provider ineligible for contracts for eight years, alleging “improper” benefits were given to the bank’s employees.
Satyam was founded in 1987 by Ramalinga Raju and Rama Raju and counts ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker, and Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third-biggest carmaker, among its customers.
“This company had a five-star independent board and it had a leading auditor and still it managed the con,” said Tarun Sisodia, a Mumbai-based analyst with Anand Rathi Securities Ltd. “So the question is why only Satyam, why not every other company.”

Eros International and Ayngaran International have finally washed their hands off their prestigious mega budget project - Endhiran.
Putting all speculations to rest, Sun Pictures, an unit of Sun TV, has brought this multilingual film for a whopping Rs. 165 crores. The production house – Eros International had produced two Bollywood flicks Drona and Yuvvraj recently.
But these films did not do well at the box office and the production house was reeling under severe financial pressure ever since these releases. It is said that the producers were looking for a suitable "buyer" to sell Endhiran, as they could not continue with the project. The major factor that was taken into consideration during the discussion with Sun Pictures was Rajinikanth's call sheet.
It is said that Rajini was due to take part in the shooting from December 19th, 2008 to January 30th 2009. The next schedule was due to commence from February 4th onwards.
The producers probably did not want to waste this all-important call sheet and therefore settled for a quick solution. With director Shankar in no mood to compromise on the production cost of the movie, the extremely high advance amount that Eros International had paid to some of the top actors and actresses from Bollywood for future projects and the overall global economic meltdown, are the other factors attributed to their inability to support Endhiran any further.
An official announcement is expected from Sun Pictures.!

இவைகளெல்லாம் ஒருபுறம் இருப்பினும் , சமீப காலமாக சில நிகழ்வுகள் அல்லது சில விடயங்கள் எங்களையும் சங்கடப்படுத்துபவைகளாகவே இருக்கின்றன..........கழகப்பற்றையும் தாண்டிய கவலைகள் அவை.....அக்கவலைகளும் கூட கழகத்தை விமர்சிக்கும் போக்கில் எழுந்தவைகள் அல்ல.........ஒரு சாமான்ய திமுக தொண்டனுக்குண்டான ஆதங்கங்கள் என்றே வைத்துக்கொள்ளலாம்...!!!!!
· மின்வெட்டே தமிழகத்தில் இல்லை என்றே அனுதினமும் பத்திரிகைகளில் பேட்டி யளிக்கும் மாண்புமிகு மின் துறை அமைச்சர் திரு.ஆற்காட்டார் அவர்களுக்கு "கைப்புண்ணுக்கு கண்ணாடி தேவையில்லை" என்கிற மாபெரும் உண்மை புரியாதது ஏன்??? இவ்வாறு பத்திரிகைகளுக்கு பேட்டியளித்து மேலும் மக்களை எரிச்சலுக்குள்ளாக்குவது ஏன்???
· உண்மை நிலையை மக்களுக்கு எடுத்துச்சொல்லி மின் விநியோகத்தை சீர்படுத்த முயற்சிப்போம் என்று வெளிப்படையாக சொல்வதில் என்ன சிரமம்??? அதை விடுத்து , சிறு வயதுக் குழந்தை தன் தாயின் முந்தானையை பிடித்துக்கொண்டே அலைவதைப்போல நீங்கள் எங்கே சென்றாலும் உங்கள் பின்னாலேயே பின் தொடர்வது , ஆற்காட்டார் போன்ற தலைசிறந்த அரசியல்வாதிக்கு அழகா??? ஆற்காட்டார் தம் துறையில் கவனம் செலுத்துவதில்லை என்ற குற்றச்சாட்டை மேலும் வலுப்படுத்தும் என்பதை ஏன் புரிந்து கொள்ள மறுக்கிறார் தலைவர் ஆற்காட்டார்????
· இலவச வண்ணத்தொலைக்காட்சி திட்டம் தமிழக மக்கள் பெரும்பாலானோர் விரும்பாத திட்டமென்பதும் , திமுக தொண்டன் கூட உங்கள் மேலான ஆட்சியின் சாதனைகளை விளிக்கும்போதுகூட அதை விடுத்தே சொல்ல வேண்டிய சங்கடம் இருப்பது தெரியுமா???? இன்றைக்கும் , நாம் திமுகவின் தனிப்பெரும்பான்மையை கடந்த தேர்தலில் இழக்கக்காரணம் இந்த இலவச வண்ணத்தொலைக்காட்சி என்பதை புரிந்துகொள்வீர்களா???

· எல்லாம் தெரிந்ததாக தனக்குத்தானே சொல்லிக்கொண்டு , எந்நேரமும் தங்களை அர்ச்சிப்பதையே தொழிலாக்கக்கொண்டிருக்கும் "எதுவுமே உணர்ந்தறியாத" ஞானி போன்றவர்கள் உங்களை விமர்சித்த போது , உங்கள் முதுமையை கிண்டலடித்த போது , அதை முழுமூச்சாய் பற்பல கட்டுரைகள் மூலமாயும் - விகடன் அலுவலகத்திற்கு பற்பல தகவல் தொடர்பு சாதனங்கள் மூலமாயும் அழுத்தத்தை கொடுத்தவர்கள் நாங்கள்...இன்றைக்கு இருவது வயது இளைஞர் செய்ய இயலாத காரியங்களையும் , வேலைகளையும் 85 வயது இளைஞரான நீங்கள் செய்வது கண்டு நாங்கள் பெருமைப்படுகிறோம்!!!!!!
· ஆனாலும் , முதுமையான இந்த வயதில் , கட்சியின் முக்கிய தலைவர்களான பேராசிரியர் , ஆற்காட்டார் , கோசி மணி இன்னும் பலர் முதுமையை எட்டுகின்ற ஒரு வேளையில் கட்சிக்கு புத்துணர்வு ஊட்ட வேண்டியது மிகுந்த அவசியம்...அதற்கு இளைய தலைமுறையிடம் ஆட்சிப்பொறுப்புக்களை ஒப்படைத்துவிட்டு சீனியர் தலைவர்கள் கட்சிப்பொறுப்பை பார்த்துக்கொள்வதே உடனடித்தேவை..........
· ஸ்டாலின் அவர்களை சற்றேறக்குறைய கட்சியின் எல்லா மட்டங்களிலும் ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட ஒரு சூழலில் இன்னும் அவரை முதல்வராக்குவதை எந்த சக்தி தடுக்கிறது என்றே புரியாமல் விழித்துக்கொண்டிருப்பது தமிழக மக்கள் மட்டுமல்ல ...ஒவ்வொரு திமுக தொண்டனும் கூடத்தான்....!!! உங்களுக்குப்பின்னும் கட்சி தன் இடத்தை தமிழகத்தில் தக்கவைத்துக்கொள்ள இதுவே வழி....இதைத்தவிர வேறெதுவுமில்லை!!!!
· "ஸ்டாலின்" அவர்கள் தாம் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட ஒவ்வொரு பொறுப்புக்களையும் உங்களின் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பை விஞ்சி நிறைவேற்றி இருக்கிறார் என்பதை தாங்களும் உணர்வீர்கள் !!!! !தமிழக மக்களும் உணர்வார்கள்...இத்தகையதொரு சூழல் மறுபடியும் கிட்டுமா , ஸ்டாலினுக்கு மகுடம் சூட்ட இதைவிட சிறந்த தருணம் உண்டா என்று கேட்டால் இல்லையென்று சொல்லவே நான் தலைப்படுவேன்...இது உண்மைதானே???
இன்னும் நிறைய..கண்டிப்பாக உங்கள் தொண்டர்களின் உணர்வுகள் புரியுமென்றே நினைக்கிறோம்....எமது ஆதங்கங்கள் களையப்படும் நாளை வெகு விரைவில் எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம்.....
இன்னும் ஒரு நூற்றாண்டுக்கு "திமுக" என்னும் மாபெரும் விருட்சம் தளைத்தோங்கி மக்கள் இளைப்பாற வழிவகை செய்யும் என்றே நாம் நம்புகிறோம்.....

so this may be the answer “In 2001, SCO sold the SCO brand, SCO Open Server (SCO's version of UNIX), and the Bell Labs version of UNIX to Caldera, which now does business under the SCO name.”

But now, these other auto markets are also showing signs of weakness. In India, auto sales fell in August, the second monthly decline in a row. Sales in China also fell, marking the first decline in auto sales in two years.
"Even in India, they are not immune to the cyclical nature of the economy," says Tatsuo Yoshida, an analyst for UBS Securities in Tokyo. "Investors have been very nervous about near term prospects of the Indian automobile market."
Looking to draw buyers back into the dealer showrooms during the upcoming festival months in India, Honda's new City model is part of a wave of new vehicle launches by car makers into the country's increasingly crowded auto market.
In 2007, the current City model was Honda's biggest seller, accounting for 37,000 of its total sales of 60,000 vehicles. In the first eight months of this year, sales of the current City are up 12% compared with the same period a year ago. The Japanese auto maker is expecting the new model to help lift Honda's India sales above last year's. Honda's goal for 2008 is to sell 80,000 vehicles in India, though it may not reach that target because of the slowdown in the Indian car market.
Honda's Mr. Fukui said the "sturdy" and "roomy" City is "Honda's most significant model" in the Indian market. Though it would be considered a compact, entry-level vehicle in developed markets, the City is viewed as a premium vehicle preferred by business executives here. The new model will cost about 800,000 rupees, making it Honda's least expensive vehicle in the Indian market but still beyond the reach of most car buyers.
Although Honda dominates the motorcycle market in India, the Japanese car maker doesn't yet offer any models in India's small car segment, which make up the vast majority of car sales.
The new City was also launched this month in Thailand, one of 39 countries where the model has been sold since the first-generation City was launched in 1996. Honda is planning to make the City one of its core models, similar to the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Fit.

Infosys Technologies, India’s second-biggest software developer, said it plans to raise the share of its revenues from Europe to counter a slowdown in the US, the world’s biggest economy, which fetches it about 60 per cent of its sales.
Infosys, which earned 28 per cent of its revenues from the European Union in the year ended March 31, 2008, plans to expand its sales and marketing offices and hire more people in Europe. The Bangalore-based company will also post more employees at customer sites in Europe seeking to win more orders and eventually shift a part of the work to India.
“Europe had been slow in terms of adopting offshoring, where as the US is a much advanced market. Now slowly Europe is opening up. It is a great market; especially the UK is a big market for us. But we have some additional concerns like language, and others which we have to handle. We need to have front-end there,” V Balakrishnan, chief financial officer of the company told shareholders.
Infosys has a workforce of over 91,000 employees from 70 nationalities working in over 90 countries. During 2007-08, the company recruited a record 33,177 people against its projected hiring plans for 25,000. The software developer is seriously looking at the new kind of Visa which is in the process of getting approved. Under this, people from countries outside of Europe can go on a short-term work to European countries.
Unlike the US, Infosys does not have good front-end capabilities in most of the European countries except in the UK and certain parts of Eastern Europe.
European market which is dominated by diverse language speaking countries is a concern for most of the offshore IT services companies. Besides, the offshoring norms in most European nations differ from country to country due to tight regulatory norms on data security. “Markets are rapidly globalising with the reduction of barriers to trade. We are encouraged by the European Union’s move to open up their market to the movement of natural persons by creating new visa types that will enable the freer flow of top talent,” said N R Narayana Murthy, chairman and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies.
It is understood that the draft for the new visa types has already been proposed, and it may take one to two years till it is approved. As a part of its initiatives to create a diverse workforce of multi-cultural, multi-ethinic origin, Infosys has started hiring students from universities all across the world.
The first batch of graduates from the UK have already been trained and inducted by the company during the last fiscal year. The company is now examining the possibilities of expanding this programme to many more countries, according to Murthy.
Murthy said, “As corporations grow and globalise, I am convinced that the greatest challenge they will face will be the creation of a diverse workforce.”
For fiscal 2008, Infosys has rewarded its shareholders with a special dividend of Rs 20 per share (400 per cent on Rs 5 per share) for crossing $1 billion in net income under the US accounting practice.
